Health Tip: Approach Holiday Eating With a Healthier Attitude

Food is a focal point of many a holiday celebration, so you should make your choices wisely.

The United States Department of Agriculture suggests:

  • Give your favorite holiday recipes a healthier makeover. Prepare dishes such as green salad with unsalted nuts, whole-grain crackers and hummus as an appetizer, and use low-fat milk as a substitute for more fattening options.
  • Include in your main meal lean protein, such as trimmed fish, turkey, fresh ham or roast beef. Enjoy low- or no-calorie drinks, such as water or seltzer with a slice of lemon.
  • Substitute applesauce or ripe mashed bananas for butter. Create a fresh fruit and yogurt parfait for dessert.
  • Focus less on food, and more on dancing and talking.
  • Plan walks and other forms of exercise.
