New research shows just how dangerous the flu can be in children. The study, published in the journal Pediatrics, analyzed data on 241 kids who went to the emergency room with moderate to severe influenza-like symptoms.

More than one-third of them developed severe complications, most often pneumonia, followed by respiratory failure and seizures. There was one death. While the risk was significantly higher in children with neurological or neuromuscular conditions, up to 40 percent of the girls and boys who developed severe complications did not have any chronic medical illnesses.

The researchers say these findings support the prescription of antiviral therapy for both at-risk and previously healthy children with moderate to severe influenza-like-illness, especially during high peak flu seasons.
