School Violence and ER Visits

When you send your children to school…you shouldn’t have to fear for their safety.

But a brand new study shows an alarming number of students are intentionally injured at school in violent episodes.

The research, just published in the journal Pediatrics, tracked emergency room visits between 2001 and 2008.

Students who were intentionally injured at school made up 10-percent of the near 7-point-4 million emergency visits tracked. With boys and those in the 10 to 14 age bracket most often injured in school.

The researchers also tracked intentional incidents outside of the school setting. Girls, and teens between 15 and 19 were at higher risk here.

Fractures were the most common injury in school. Lacerations were the most common outside the school setting.

This study backs up others on the subject, all pointing to the need for better ways to identify potentially harmful situations…and to nip them in the bud.
