Health Tip: Supporting a Child Who Struggles With Anxiety

Parents can provide lots of comfort and reassurance to a fearful child.

The Anxiety and Depression Association of America advises:

  • Acknowledge your child’s feelings. When he or she begins feeling anxious, remain calm.
  • Offer praise and recognition for your child’s accomplishments. If your child is struggling to progress or makes mistakes, don’t punish the child.
  • During a time that is stressful, adjust your expectations accordingly.
  • Prepare for difficult situations, such as leaving for school in the morning.
