Health Tip: Use Caution When Exercising in Hot Weather

Exercising in the heat of summer sun is harder on your heart. But a few precautions can help keep you safe.

The Cleveland Clinic advises:

  • Schedule outdoor workouts for the early morning or evening hours, when it’s cooler.
  • Slow down from your usual pace to ease stress on your heart and body.
  • Drink plenty of fluids (water is ideal) before, during and after exercise. Start with 8 oz. to 12 oz. of fluids before the workout. Replenish with 6 oz. to 10 oz. of fluids per 30 minutes of exercise.
  • Avoid clothing that prevents sweat from evaporating. Opt for loosely-fitting cotton short-sleeved tops and shorts.
